Fall rec flag football on the NFL Flag model: 5-on-5, no contact, one practice and one game a week. Register in summer, play September through November, league tournament at the end. Many operators run a spring season too.

Flag football is the lightest commitment in youth sports that still looks like a real season. One practice a week, one game on the weekend, eight to ten weeks, done. Total gear cost is cleats and a mouthguard.

The NFL Flag structure is a license, not a single league. Your local operator might be a parks department, a YMCA, or a private club, and quality varies with the operator rather than the brand. Watch one game before assuming anything about coaching or competitiveness.

The tournament layer above the rec season is easy to ignore and most families should. League winners can advance to regionals and then the NFL Flag Championships the following summer, and a small travel-flag circuit exists year-round. None of that is the product you signed up for in June.
