Flag football pathway: 5U through varsity girls' flag

What good looks like at every age in flag football. Flag-pulling and route milestones, the NFL Flag structure, the girls' varsity boom, and the tackle question handled honestly.

Age band

5–7

Skill milestones

· Pulls a flag instead of grabbing the runner
· Catches a soft toss from a few yards, body catching allowed
· Runs to the right end zone, most downs
· Lines up roughly where pointed

What good practice looks like

· 45-60 minutes, once a week, plus the game
· Everything is a chase game or a relay; standing in lines kills this age
· 5v5 NFL Flag format on a small field
· Every kid touches the ball every game. Track it if the coach doesn't.

Social and emotional

· Scores are forgotten by snack time. Follow the kids' lead on that.
· Some kids cry when their flag gets pulled. Normal, passes fast.
· The jersey matters more than the result. NFL team jerseys are half the draw of NFL Flag.

Parent decision points

· Which league? The closest one with good adults. Format differences mean nothing at 6.
· Tackle 'tiny-mite' offers? No. There is no development case for tackle at this age.
· Lessons? No.

Age band

8–10

Skill milestones

· Runs three or four real routes: slant, out, go, hitch
· Catches with hands away from the body, sometimes
· Pulls flags with an angle, not a dive
· Plays both ways and learns the no-contact rules: no blocking, no screening in most formats

What good practice looks like

· 60-75 minutes, once or twice a week
· Route running and flag pulling get drilled as skills, not assumed
· Everyone plays QB at least sometimes. The position rotates or the league has the wrong adults.
· Small-sided scrimmage closes every practice

Social and emotional

· Kids notice who scores. Spread the touches before the bench politics start.
· First refs-are-wrong meltdowns. Your sideline behavior is the curriculum.
· Friend retention beats skill development for keeping kids in the game

Parent decision points

· Tackle at 9 or 10? The delay-to-14 guidance exists for a reason. Flag develops the same skills minus the head contact.
· Travel flag teams? Emerging and mostly unnecessary at this age.
· Second league in the same season? No. One league plus free play.

Age band

11–12

Skill milestones

· Reads coverage at a kid level: sits in the open spot, breaks off a route when chased
· Throws on the run with some accuracy if playing QB
· Defends a zone, communicates switches
· Center-QB exchange and motion timing look like actual football

What good practice looks like

· 75-90 minutes, twice a week in season
· Install a real but small offense: formations, motion, option routes for the sharp kids
· Conditioning hides inside competitive drills, not laps
· Film is optional and short: one series, one teaching point

Social and emotional

· Position identity hardens: QB, rusher, deep threat. Rotate anyway.
· The tackle question peaks here, usually driven by peers, not by the kid's actual preference. Ask the kid alone.
· Trash talk arrives with puberty. Coaches who allow it are telling you something.

Parent decision points

· Tackle at 13 or stay flag? Honest fork. Tackle has a real development path; flag now does too, especially for girls. Decide on the kid's want, not the dad's memory.
· Club or travel flag? Fine if local options thinned out. Cost-check it first.
· Girls' team or coed? Wherever she gets real reps. Girls-only leagues are growing fast and worth a drive.

13–14

Skill milestones

· Route tree is real: stems, breaks, tempo changes
· QBs read half the field and throw with anticipation
· Defensive recognition: formation tells, down-and-distance tendencies
· Flag mechanics are clean under pressure, both hands, eyes on hips

What good practice looks like

· School or club season plus skill work; speed training pays off more than another league
· Strength training enters: bodyweight, sprint mechanics, then bars
· 7v7 passing work overlaps heavily here for kids headed to tackle
· Two months off per year still applies

Social and emotional

· Kids who chose flag over tackle field questions about it. Arm them with the answer: it's a varsity and Olympic sport now.
· Girls' flag tryouts arrive in sanctioned states; first cut experiences for many
· Speed-and-size sorting gets visible. Late bloomers need the long view said out loud.

Parent decision points

· High school tackle, high school girls' flag, or club flag? Map what your state actually sanctions through NFHS before assuming.
· Position camps? One good one beats four mediocre ones.
· Specialize in flag? For girls in sanctioned states, this is now a real varsity-letter answer.

Age band

15+

Skill milestones

· Varsity-pace decision speed: ball out in under three seconds, routes thrown on time
· Plays a defined role and knows the scheme, not just the assignment
· Closing speed and pursuit angles separate defenders at this level
· Leads at practice: calls, alignments, tempo

What good practice looks like

· Sanctioned girls' varsity flag runs a real season: daily practice, district schedules, playoffs
· Boys' flag at this age is club, intramural, or 7v7 adjacent; tackle owns the school season
· Sprint and strength programs carry the off-season
· Film becomes standard where the varsity structure exists

Social and emotional

· Girls' flag recruiting is starting: NAIA schools offer scholarships and college flag is expanding behind the 2028 Olympics
· For most boys, flag becomes the lifetime-rec version of the sport. That's a feature.
· Senior-year endings deserve a real goodbye either way

Parent decision points

· College flag for girls? NAIA programs and emerging NCAA interest are real. Film and direct contact beat services.
· Olympic-pathway talk? USA Football runs the national-team pipeline. Legitimate, tiny, and worth a look only for the genuinely elite.
· Keep playing for fun? Adult flag leagues are everywhere. The sport doesn't have to end at 18.

· Switching to tackle because teammates did. Flag through 14 is a legitimate path, and several pediatric groups recommend delaying tackle at least that long.
· QB private lessons at 8. The kid throwing it this year is rarely the kid throwing it at 14.
· Playbooks thicker than the kids can read. Five plays run well beat thirty run badly.
· 7v7 showcase circuits before high school. That economy feeds on flag families; see the 7v7 pathway.
· Year-round flag across three leagues. Two months off per year, per AAP, even for a non-contact sport.

Reframe

If your kid is "ahead" or "behind".

· The fastest 7-year-old wins every game at 7. By 12, route discipline and flag-pulling angles beat raw speed.
· A kid who can't catch at 8 usually can at 10. Hand-eye tracking matures late; more catch in the yard, not more leagues.
· Girls who start flag at 12 are not behind. The girls' varsity game is young enough that ninth-grade beginners make varsity rosters every year.
· Flag stats predict nothing about tackle. Different game, different bodies, different winners.

Where your kid is on the path

Flag is no longer just the on-ramp to tackle. It's an Olympic sport for LA 2028 and a sanctioned girls' varsity sport in a growing list of states through NFHS. Through 10 the job is catching, pulling flags, and chasing people. The tackle conversation belongs at 12-14, and 'never' is a complete answer.

Flag football spent decades as tackle’s waiting room and stopped being that. The girls’ varsity wave through NFHS, the NAIA scholarship programs, and the LA 2028 Olympic slot make flag a destination sport with its own pathway. The bands above treat it that way.

The tackle decision still sits in the middle of this pathway for boys, and it deserves a calm, informed call at 12-14 rather than a default. Ask the kid alone, away from the carpool.
