Scripts

At halftime. What to say.

What to say during the halftime break. The script for the two minutes you have before they go back out.

What they're feeling

  • · Tired and regrouping.
  • · Already hearing it from the coach.
  • · Wanting to hear from you that things are okay.
  • · Not ready for analysis right now.

What to say (pick one)

  • "You're doing great. Keep going."
  • "Drink some water."
  • "I'm having a blast watching."

Then stop talking.

What not to say

  • "You need to do more of what you did in the third quarter of last week's game."
  • "Your coach is putting you in the wrong spot."
  • "You better come out stronger in the second half."

The rule

Halftime is the coach's territory. Your job is two sentences of support and then step back.

If they bring it up

  • · If they're frustrated, say that's okay and they can fix it in the second half.
  • · Keep it short. They don't have time to process right now.
  • · Save the longer conversation for after the game.

Pin this

At halftime

  • · Two sentences max. Support and send them back.
  • · Don't compete with the coach's message.
  • · The longer conversation happens after. Not now.
