Ask the coach for two lists: what the swimmer brings to practice and what the swimmer wears or packs for a meet.
Those lists prevent the common mistake of buying team-supplied training tools or a competition suit that the swimmer cannot use.
Start with personal practice basics
For the first practices, a parent can usually start with:
- a suit approved by the coach or facility
- goggles that feel comfortable and hold a seal for the swimmer
- a towel and labeled water bottle
- a ventilated bag for wet gear
Ask whether the team expects a cap and whether it supplies a team cap. Label every personal item, and let the swimmer test the suit and goggles during practice before relying on them at a meet.
The swimming buying guide handles product categories and fit questions after the coach confirms the list. This page stays focused on what to verify and pack.
Separate practice gear from meet swimwear
Meet swimwear is governed by the competition’s current rules, not by a retailer’s description. USA Swimming’s Rules and Policies page publishes the current rulebook and later interpretations for its sanctioned meets.
Under the current USA Swimming rules, swimwear includes a swimsuit, cap, and goggles, but that definition does not make every item mandatory for every swimmer. The rulebook also limits the design and use of competition swimwear, so ask the coach to approve a meet suit before buying it.
If the meet is run by another organization, use that organization’s rulebook. The swim meet weekend guide covers the wider family packing and timing plan.
Wait for a coach request on training tools
Fins, kickboards, pull buoys, paddles, snorkels, and other training tools belong on the coach’s list. A club may supply them, specify a type, or not use them with a new group.
The same pause applies to specialized competition suits. A higher price, technical label, or teammate’s preference does not establish that a suit is legal, useful for this swimmer, or requested by the program.
Before the first evaluation, read what to expect at swimming tryouts. Then arrive with the confirmed basics and leave the training shelf alone until the coach asks.
