Start with the camp’s list. It knows whether your kid needs a sleeping bag, sport gear, medications at check-in, or a white shirt for the Thursday-night activity. Our list is the layer that keeps one missing sock or one wet towel from wrecking the bag.

Write your kid’s name on everything. Send gear they already know, and let the good clothes stay home.

Pack the day-camp bag

Pack two filled water bottles, a sun hat, a small towel, a wet bag, backup socks and underwear, and one allowed snack. Put a card with your phone number in the front pocket. The backup items belong where a kid can reach them, not under three towels.

Ask how the camp handles sunscreen and insect repellent before sending either. The CDC recommends wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, while the EPA tells adults to follow the repellent label and not let children handle the product. Camp staff may collect these products or apply them on a schedule.

Pack cleats, gloves, racquets, or dance shoes only when the camp asks. Brand-new gear stays home. Camp is a bad place to discover that a shoe rubs or a mouthguard does not fit.

Add only what overnight camp needs

For an overnight week, add one outfit per day plus two extras, extra socks and underwear, a sweatshirt, rain layer, two swimsuits when water is involved, a flashlight, and a laundry bag. A familiar pillowcase and a short note from home do more work than another pile of clothes.

Use our first overnight camp packing list for the full cabin version. If you are still deciding whether the timing is right, read the day-camp versus overnight readiness check before buying anything.

Skip cash unless the camp names an amount. Skip phones, expensive gear, favorite irreplaceable items, and five different evening activities. One book and one deck of cards are enough.

Unpack outside

Open the bag on the porch or in the garage. Sort wet, dirty, and salvageable before anything reaches the laundry room, then check the camp’s lost-and-found instructions while the missing item is still easy to identify.
