Your gym texts that the October parent night is next Saturday. Someone on the parent chat already called it the first competition of the year.

Wrong.

A dress rehearsal with an audience. The team runs the full routine on the spring floor for families and friends, usually once. Coaches scribble cleanup notes while the kids feel the music, the lights, and the mild pressure of people watching.

Nobody hands out a Worlds bid from that night.

All-star competition season under USASF programs typically opens in November and runs through spring. October stays cleaning season: mock meets plus a family performance so the gym can watch the routine under mild pressure before travel weekends start.

What you are watching for. Count hits. Watch whether stunt groups stick landings without panic, and whether your kid knows the next spot after a transition.

Do not invent a season ranking from one family night. Placements, deductions, and official score sheets belong only to judged events later in the fall, after travel weekends begin. A medal is hospitality.

Why gyms run these at all. Plenty of first-year families have never seen a two-and-a-half-minute all-star routine live. Grandparents who skip Saturday qualifiers still get one clean look.

Kids freeze. A safer first floor before the real check-in line is the whole point of the night for them. The gym also uses the evening as a marketing and confidence tool, and that is fine.

Skip scoring the marketing.

Treat October as rehearsal for the season, not a verdict on it.

How competition day will feel different. At a real event you buy spectator tickets, drop your athlete with coaches for a closed warm-up, then watch a roughly two-and-a-half-minute routine once. Some weekends the team goes twice before awards, and the wait between runs is longer than the routine itself.

Judges sit at floor level with a score sheet. Warm-up rooms stay off-limits to parents at most events, which is standard policy rather than a personal snub.

If the parent night felt long and informal, good. November will feel tighter, louder, and more expensive on the same calendar. Pack snacks either way.

For the year-round map, all-star cheer season timing lays out October mocks versus November openers. Still sorting sideline from all-star? Start with competitive cheer versus sideline cheer.

When the music cuts and the kids freeze for a pose, clap hard. Save the score-sheet nerves for the first real competition weekend of the season.
