Junior Olympic (JO) Program
Levels 1-3 are compulsory: every gymnast performs the same routine. Levels 4-6 remain compulsory or modified compulsory depending on the gym and state. Levels 7-10 are optional routines with minimum skill requirements. Elite is above Level 10 and feeds into national team programs.
The JO track requires mastering every compulsory skill before advancing. A gymnast cannot skip a level. Hours per week increase significantly at Level 4 and above, with most Level 6+ gymnasts training 16-25 hours per week.
Xcel Program
Xcel runs from Bronze through Diamond with more flexibility in routine construction. Gymnasts can compete without meeting the full JO skill requirements. Training hours are typically lower, usually 6-12 hours per week at the mid-levels.
Xcel was created specifically for athletes who want competitive gymnastics without the path toward elite. It is not a lesser program. It is a different goal.
Which track?
The gym recommends which track based on skill level, physical development, and hours available. Most families do not choose between JO and Xcel until the competitive track begins, usually around Level 3 or the pre-team assessment. A good gym will be direct about what they see and which path fits the athlete in front of them.
College gymnastics
NCAA Division I gymnastics recruits from JO Levels 8-10 almost exclusively. Xcel gymnasts rarely have the skill base required for D1. D3 and club gymnastics are more accessible but still require substantial competitive history.
