Coaches skip the certifications that feel optional. SafeSport doesn’t fall in that bucket, even though it gets treated that way half the time.

Congress made this one mandatory

Congress passed the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act in 2017. It requires any organization affiliated with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to train adults who have regular contact with minor athletes on recognizing and reporting abuse.

USA Hockey, US Soccer, USA Swimming, USA Baseball, and most other NGB-affiliated youth sports fall under that umbrella. Your league passes the requirement down to you because federal law obligates the league to.

The training runs on a five-year cycle

Year one is the SafeSport Trained Core course, about 90 minutes. Years two through four are shorter refreshers, 20 to 30 minutes each, cycling through recognizing and reporting misconduct, preventing misconduct, and creating a positive sport environment. Year five restarts the cycle with the Core course.

Miss a year and you’re out of compliance the day your 365 days run out. No grace period.

The one-on-one rule most coaches don’t know exists

SafeSport’s Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies limit private contact between coaches and athletes under 18. No closed-door meetings. No one-on-one electronic communication that a parent can’t see.

Every NGB adopted the current version of that policy by January 1, 2025. The rule removes the setting where most abuse actually happens: unsupervised, one-on-one, no witnesses.

Skip it and your NGB has to bench you

The Center audits every NGB and the USOPC at least once a year. Non-compliance findings come with a corrective deadline, and NGBs that don’t fix them face further penalties from the Center.

For an individual coach, sanctions run from a written warning up through permanent ineligibility. NGBs are required by law to enforce whatever the Center hands down, including temporary suspensions while a matter gets sorted out. Your league doesn’t get a choice on whether to sideline you.

Compare that to the other four names on the certifications list. NOCSAE and HECC only test helmets. Heads Up Football and USA Baseball’s coach courses are strongly encouraged, one of them tied specifically to tackle-coaching.

SafeSport is the one the federal government decided you don’t get to coach without. Free for anyone affiliated with an NGB. Ninety minutes, then a short refresher every year after that. Cheap for what it buys.
