Travel hockey runs September through March with tryouts squeezed into late August, and the calendar belongs to the rink. Ice time is scarce and expensive, so practices land at whatever hour the association could buy. Early mornings and weeknights at 9pm are both on the table.

The budget conversation matters more in hockey than almost any sport. Between association fees, tournament travel, and gear that gets outgrown mid-season, a 12U travel year runs $3,000–8,000 depending on region and how far the team travels. Ask for the full-season cost in writing at tryouts, not month by month as the invoices arrive.

The spring decision is the one to hold the line on. Spring 3-on-3, summer camps, and skills clinics are all optional at 12U no matter how the flyer reads. USA Hockey’s own development model wants kids in other sports in the off-months.
