School theater: fall play, spring musical, festival season

The standard school production cycle: fall play auditions in September with performances in November, spring musical auditions in December or January with performances in March or April, and thespian festival season layered through winter and into June. Tech week is the load nobody warns families about.

School theater runs on a two-show year: a fall play that performs in November and a spring musical that performs in March or April. Each show follows the same arc, six to ten weeks of after-school rehearsal that builds slowly, then tech week, which arrives like finals week with paint.

The casting conversations are the parenting work in this activity. Cast lists post on a wall or a website, the lead went to someone else, and the drama teacher’s decision is final in a way youth sports parents are not used to. The script for after a bad game works here word for word.

Festival season is the layer families discover late. State thespian festivals run in winter, some states run one-act play contests, and the International Thespian Festival in June is a national-level week for troupes that go. Ask the director in September which of these the program does, because each one adds dates.
