Scripts

After a championship loss. What to say.

What to say when the season ends with a championship loss. The script for when there's no next game to look forward to.

What they're feeling

  • · Devastated in a way that surprises even them.
  • · Like all of it, the whole season, just ended.
  • · Replaying the moments that might have changed it.
  • · Not ready to hear any silver linings.

What to say (pick one)

  • "That was a hard way to end it."
  • "You gave everything this season. That's real."
  • "I don't need anything from you right now. Just be sad if you are."

Then stop talking.

What not to say

  • "You'll get them next year."
  • "At least you made it this far."
  • "You should be proud. Second place is still great."

The rule

Let the loss be a loss. Don't reframe it before they're ready.

If they bring it up

  • · If they want to talk about the game, talk about it.
  • · Don't rush to the season highlights reel.
  • · If they're crying in the car, let them cry.
  • · The next 48 hours aren't for lessons. They're for processing.

After a championship loss

  • · Quiet is okay. Silence on the way home is fine.
  • · Don't start the offseason motivation speech today.
  • · Be present. Nothing else is required.
