The program may supply the most expensive pieces, and its current rules decide which remaining items a player must bring.

Ask the league before buying

First confirm whether the season is tackle or flag, then request the equipment list for the player’s division. Ask who supplies the helmet, shoulder pads, practice pants or girdle, game uniform, and flags.

For tackle, buy only the personal items named on that list. That may include a mouthguard, practice clothing, permitted footwear, a labeled water bottle, and program-specified padding. Do not assume a list from another league or last season still applies.

Verify the helmet record and fit

NOCSAE writes performance standards, but it does not certify or approve individual football helmets. Its football helmet certification clarification explains that an independent certifying body oversees manufacturer compliance.

For a league-provided or family-owned helmet, look for the required certification and recertification labels, then follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions. NOCSAE’s recertification guidance says the recertification label identifies who performed the work and when, while the manufacturer sets the interval.

Do not buy an anonymous used helmet with no readable history. Ask the equipment manager to confirm that the exact helmet is accepted, current, complete, and fitted before the first contact practice.

Pack the confirmed list

Use one final check before leaving home:

  • helmet and shoulder pads, if the program says the player brings them
  • every required pad or garment, installed as the program directs
  • mouthguard and permitted footwear named by the league
  • practice jersey or shirt, labeled water bottle, and any required paperwork
