Draws are 50-50 plays. The girls’ game starts each half and restarts after each goal with a draw at the center circle. This drill teaches young players the mechanics and builds confidence in winning the ball off the draw.

Equipment needed: 4 cones, 1 ball, 8 sticks.

Setup: Place one cone at the center. Two players line up at the center, sticks held back-to-back at hip height with the ball pinched between the heads. A coach stands to the side to call the whistle.

How to run it:

  1. Two draw players get in position: sticks back-to-back at hip height, ball pinched in the heads, feet set, eyes forward.
  2. Coach calls “Go.” Both players lift and pull up sharply to send the ball into the air or toward their side.
  3. Both players then move to control the ball and win it back to their side. Stick-checks must follow girls’ rules (controlled, no slashing).
  4. Do 10 reps per pair, alternating sides (player A on left, then on right).

What to look for:

Each player should be balanced with feet set. If they’re leaning or off-balance, they can’t react after the lift. The first move should be explosive, not cautious. The player who gets the cleanest lift and the fastest second step often wins the ball. Both players should fight for the ground ball after the initial draw. If one player is getting beaten every rep, rotation might be the right call so the matchup stays useful.

Variation: Add wing players outside the center circle who can move on the whistle and compete for any draw ball that flies past the two centers.
