The pump fake is the QB’s first real weapon for moving safeties. It only works if it looks like a throw.

Equipment needed: A football, two receivers running staggered routes (one short, one deep), one QB.

Setup: Short receiver runs a 5-yard out. Deep receiver runs a 15-yard post behind them.

How to run it:

  1. QB drops three steps. Pump the ball at the short receiver — full motion, eyes on them, weight forward.
  2. Don’t actually release. Bring the ball back.
  3. Reset weight, find the deep receiver, deliver.
  4. Ten reps. Switch the pump direction every few.

What to look for: The pump has to look real. If the QB’s eyes don’t sell it, no safety bites. Full follow-through halfway, then a clean recovery.

Variation: Add a safety in the middle of the field who reacts to the pump. If they break on the short route, the deep ball is open. If they don’t, throw the short.
