Cover 3 is the most common 7v7 defense. Every player has to know exactly where their zone starts and ends.

Equipment needed: Cones marking the three deep zones (left third, middle third, right third). Three defenders, two receivers.

Setup: Field width is 53 yards. Each deep zone is roughly 18 yards wide. Drop the cones at those boundaries about 15 yards deep.

How to run it:

  1. Three defenders line up: two cornerbacks at the sideline cones, one safety at the middle cone.
  2. Walk through their drops. On the snap, each backpedals 7-8 yards before opening hips.
  3. Run two receivers downfield. Each defender’s job: don’t let anything get behind them in their zone.
  4. Six reps. Rotate so every defender plays each position.

What to look for: Defenders don’t chase. If the receiver runs through the corner’s zone toward the safety, the corner stays in the zone — the safety picks them up.

Variation: Add a third receiver running a crossing route. Tests if the defenders pass off responsibility cleanly.
