In 7v7, the RB usually catches checkdowns — but if a defender blitzes through the line, the RB has to read and react.

Equipment needed: One RB, one defender, one QB, a ball.

Setup: RB lines up next to the QB. Defender plays linebacker, five yards back.

How to run it:

  1. On the snap, the defender chooses: drop into coverage OR fire into the backfield.
  2. RB reads the defender’s first step. If they come, the RB steps into their path, feet shoulder-width, hands up to chest-block (no contact in 7v7, but the positioning matters).
  3. If the defender drops, the RB releases into a flat route as a checkdown.
  4. Ten reps. Defender mixes it up.

What to look for: The RB’s first step is a read step — small, into the line of scrimmage. Big committed steps mean they’re guessing.

Variation: Add a second defender who comes from the other side. Tests if the RB can pick the more dangerous threat.
